LESSONS FROM OUR FEATHERED FRIENDS   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   13/XI/2021   I am not sure if people have seen a papaya tree with multiple off shoots. We have one more than sixty feet tall with protrusions as big as a tree itself every 15 feet. It gets laden with fruit on each off shoot in huge numbers. It has grown tall beyond one's reach, even the longest bamboo can’t reach the first tier. Besides, there is so much vegetation that in the greediness for the fruit it could be dangerous due to venomous snakes roaming large.   Now that one has a little time at hand, one sits in the backyard observing this huge papaya tree. Each fruit is more than two kgs plus. As the papayas ripen, it becomes a hub centre of activity for many types of birds. All of them are after the fruit, nice, juicy, pulpy, healthy, tasty and filling.   The top most tier is reserved for the Hornbills. The birds here are big and heavy, as heavy as the fruit itself if not more. Papaya leaves are delic

ARTICLE : TOM OREO & MITTENS

Image
TOM OREO & MITTENS   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   09/XI/2021   Second foster parents or Oreo left for a vacation. The third parents & fourth too suddenly had to leave for a couple of days suddenly. We did not realise it till Oreo suddenly won’t leave our doorstep.   The second parents have also adopted a kitten named Tom. ‘Tam-Tam’ is his nickname. He goes around the neighbourhood frolicking, chasing beetles and grasshoppers. While doing so he does catch a chameleon. Within a short span of time he has become a good hunter. He can fend for himself, unlike Oreo. In the afternoon when the sun is up, the duo gets into the green house for a nap.   There is water stored in the empty five litre oil cans. Cans are emergency water storage. Oreo loves to drink from them, sticking his tongue inside and lap the water up. We tried a dish, an old tiffin, even an ice tray to keep water for him. He refuses to touch them. One has to ensure that the cans are full for Sir Oreo.

ARTICLE : JOY OF GIVING

JOY OF GIVING   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   06/XI/2021   As the curtains close to our tenure in this place, it is time to say goodbye to many things. They have a sentimental connection as they were part of your household for so many years. Still, life has to go on.   A fridge was with us for more than fifteen years. Though it stood silently in a corner of the kitchen, humming and murmuring a little, chilling beer and water bottles and making ice on demand. It was in high demand during the heydays. Besides, it did all the chores effortlessly and dutifully all these years.   As age caught up, its arteries got blocked, had gas problems but then a quick visit by the ‘refrigeration doctor’ put it on road and ran even better. Unless there was no electricity or it was in transit and disconnected, this sweetheart did not stop keeping things chilled. It was high time to bid it farewell.   As it was lifted out of the kitchen, it resisted, it tilted and almost toppled over, brin

ARTICLE : TO BURST OR NOT TO BURST

TO BURST OR NOT TO BURST   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   05/XI/2021   There is a lot of debate whether we should light firecrackers on Diwali or not. Some say to hell with Court orders. Who are they to decide? ‘Air Pollution’ is not due to crackers alone, they argue. Well, I am not getting into the ‘ifs and buts’ of all that.   Definitely a small Rangoli, ‘earthen lamps’, candles & fairy lights are part of the outdoors. Our daughter does the honours for ‘Rangoli’. Earlier, I would take her to the market to buy colours, now she has grown up and gets them on her own.   As a child she would insist on buying crackers too. Most girls are not into bombs, especially loud sounding ones. Flares, anars, fulljharis, snake ki tikli, chakris and rockets are fine. Papas are around to ensure that there is a lit candle available to light the next cracker.   The local potter market too does brisk business. Diya’s are bought well in advance, soaked in water, filled with oil and kept
