  We often think of a garden as something we create and control. We choose the plants, arrange the pots, water them and watch them grow. Yet, every now and then, nature quietly reminds us that the garden belongs to far more than just the gardener.   A spider arrives without invitation, builds a magnificent home using the branches we provided, and goes about its business without asking for permission or paying rent!   Perhaps that is the real joy of a garden. We may plant it, but we never truly own it. I tried to offer my condolences, but when I stood before them, words simply failed me. Ajay and I had shared some memorable moments during our service days. His martyrdom during Kargil brought those memories flooding back. This is my personal tribute to Hercules 1, to Alka and Ankush, and to every air warrior, soldier, sailor and military family who stood behind India during the Kargil conflict. CALADIUMS have unique coloured and printed leaves. When the garden does not flower, they take their place and spread so much happiness that words cannot describe. Makes my Dil Khush. 

  VISIT TO A NEARBY LAKE   A nearby lake, a good friend, cameras, binoculars and the promise of birds. What more could one ask for a weekend morning?   This visit brought us a flamingo, spoonbills, owlets, a monitor lizard, a cooperative bee-eater, peacocks, an egret and, finally, a colony of fruit bats hanging peacefully from a banyan tree.   The birds we hoped to see may not all have appeared, but nature had plenty of surprises waiting for us.   And that is perhaps the best part of visiting the wild.
