MYSTERY OF THE MISSING GRAINS

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING GRAINS   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   13/VII/2022   With experience, many life’s mysteries get solved. Some take time to fathom & some remain unsolved too. Here is another one which got unravelled.               In our colony, people have installed bird feeders at multiple places. They also spread grains on the stony walking tracks. Some hang grain filled containers on trees too. Birds feel at home and frequent these granaries.               We too wanted to be of some help to the birds. One day, from a Kiryana Shop we picked up assorted grains. Jowar, Bajra, Wheat, Rice and Maize for a start.               A thought used to meander in my mind that it must be hurting delicate beaks of birds when they pick grains spread on stones. To avoid that sma...

A PARAMOURS WAIT

A PARAMOURS WAIT   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   21/VII/2022   In the collection of pots we have today there is one which looks like grass. It is not exactly grass but akin to it. This grass has a little background. There were two pillars on the gate of our home on which two pots of this evergreen grass were placed at Sainik School Kapurthala.               Most of the year it would stay green. As the weather changed to autumn, grass tips would brown. Something like, when people dye their hair and then forget to dye it again for a considerable time. Grey hair stands out and so does the brown in this grass. Dad would painstakingly snip off the brown portions. Once the season passed, it used to turn green again.               It bore no flowers but gave a look of a ‘green fountain’, discharging water uniformly in all directions. For me, the grass looks l...

ANCIENT TOOTHBRUSH

ANCIENT TOOTHBRUSH   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   14/VII/2022   This is a story of an ‘Urban Brat’. Dad an ‘Angrez’ with the first name ‘Archibald Cyril’. Mom was ‘Cynthia Cinderella’. Their product born near Christmas was christened ‘Noel’. Names may sound very English but deep inside there was this true desi Indian. Dad believed in so many ‘toona-totkas’.   Let me narrate two from his fishing escapades. If he crossed any person with ‘blue eyes’, he would abandon the hunt that day. Cats didn’t bother him, as we had five of them at home but a man crossing his path who had ‘cat eyes’ would draw the choicest of MCs-BCs.   He would always ‘spit’ on the ‘bait’ he threw for his first cast. What was the logic? ‘Nazar na lage’ he used to tell us. It worked as a good omen too and he used to prove it by catching a good-sized fish in the first cast. Diehard ‘Shikaris’ had their own ways of doing things.   When it comes to toothpaste, let me shar...
