SOME OBSERVATIONS

SOME OBSERVATIONS   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   10/X/2022               One loves to take an early morning walk. The cool desert breeze, when it touches the skin is bliss. Most morning walkers come out when I have finished walking.               It is now time to sit in the veranda and plonk on the ‘Mudha’. It is also time to start wishing Good Morning to Tom, Dick, Harry, Mary, and the good looking Quite Contrary. At least one induces a smile on faces, still busy watching videos on their mobiles. Some charming ladies smile back & make your day.               As I get busy with the passers-by, it is time to become Roger Federer. With a ‘black racket’ in hand, a good forehand shot is lovely to begin with. Then a back hand return, a slice, a drop shot and then a smashing volley t...

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING BUNCH

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING BUNCH   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   05/X/2022   Our neighbours are NRCs (Non-Resident Colony mates). Due to his posting in a different station, they keep visiting off and on. They are here for the Dusshera break.   They are fond of plants but then they leave them unattended. Assuming that ‘yours truly’ will not let them perish in their absence, they leave even without saying a word. However, they give a subtle hint. Moment their pots get lined up close to the common fence, it is an indication that they would be off the next day.   My wife and I do not mind and rather take pride in looking after. After all, it is our duty and hobby. They also have a few banana trees growing. Bananas are fruiting and one can see two huge bunches hanging. Everyone passing by glances at them.   There is this little girl called Pari staying on the other side of their home. Her mom told her that these are Banana trees. Banana being he...

HIDDEN GEMS

HIDDEN GEMS   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   04/X/2022               Imagine yourselves traversing a beaten path every day, kicking stones, and raising dust as usual. Every bump, every nook & corner, every pothole, every pond, every pole, every step is so well known to you that even if you are sent on that track blindfolded, you would be able to tell where you are & what is infront of you. Right!......Wrong!               What if there was a ‘gem’ hidden somewhere which you would have kicked inadvertently. Or probably mistook it for a stone and ignored it. Possible! Then one day you pay attention to details. The mundane is given a pause. The path oft travelled is seen with a different eye.   Reminded me of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Dwarfs worked in the mines full of gemstones. While working they would sing Hi-Ho, Hi-Ho…. di...

ANOTHER REASON TO SMILE

ANOTHER REASON TO SMILE   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   03/X/2022               To bring one new life in the garden can bring so much happiness. This morning brought that same joy. The quotient of gladness grows so many folds, if the experiment which you had been trying becomes successful or an old and very dear plant, which you thought had perished in the milieu, suddenly sprouts. People who have experienced this feeling would know.               I shall narrate some stories of such delight.               When we were in Alibaug, snails were a big issue. The rainy season came and they appeared in hundreds out of thin air. We had prepared a flower bed when our garden was in nascent stages with a local creeper. Little that one realised that it was the snail’s favourite ‘dish’. Within ...

SUNO G

SUNO G   LT COL NOEL ELLIS   02/X/2022               “Tauba-Tauba, Kya zamana aa gaya hai. Larka-Larki poora din telephone par baat karte hain.” This was a comment heard very often in the ‘Aunty’ circle, who noticed and commented on anything and everything in the good old days.               Telephone was a ‘Raison ki Nishani.’ It was a ‘status symbol,’ not a ‘necessity’ then. We all talked face to face. Most of us landed up in each other’s place unannounced. The whole family on a bicycle would travel to ‘call on.’ Though the preferred mode of transport was walking.               An open arm welcome was always extended. No questions were asked. No one said, “Phone kyon nahi kiya aane se pahle”. Sala phone hi nahi tha to phone kahan se karte. Phones were for emergency calls ...
