EGGS IN A NEST

EGGS IN A NEST   LT COL NOEL ELLIS 10/IV/2024   It gives me immense satisfaction to see that Brownie & Blackie the Sunbirds have selected our garage to make their nest and new home to bring up their chicks. We are indeed privileged. Today, there was some hectic activity around her nest. Lots of Sparrows and Bulbuls were teasing Brownie. A few of them almost assaulted her. For a while, she just sat frozen still in the nest. I could see her beak jutting out of the entrance of her nest. Probably she had laid eggs and was hatching them. It took me some time to understand what was going on. Birds come, hang around, pick up insects and seeds, converse, even fight & then leave. Today, they were in a different mood. There is a hanging lantern in our neighbours garage which they light up during Diwali. Sparrows and Bulbuls are probably in a tussle to make a nest in it or on it. Last year bulbuls chose one of our hanging pots. This year that pot is not the...

NEW COUPLE IN TOWN

NEW COUPLE IN TOWN   LT COL NOEL ELLIS 30/III/2024   Since about a month a couple has been visiting our neighbourhood regularly. They are shy but very talkative with each other. My guess was that they could be planning to build their abode. This couple would come, hang around, visit our garden, appreciate our flowers but then the moment I or my wife would go out they would retreat and vanish. With circumstances prevailing in society, no one talks to no one unless the ice has broken. We took it in that spirit. Renovation and construction in the neighbourhood brings its own issues. The clangs, bangs, cheen-choon of various cutters, the chatter of the labour, dust and above all an uncouth surrounding till the contractor leaves lock stock and barrel. I had it in mind to tell this couple to please cooperate and ensure to reduce pollutants to the barest minimum. I kept quiet and kept observing. Many times, they would get intimate. It was like catching Mommy kissing Santa Clau...

CATCHING A GUPPY

CATCHING A GUPPY   LT COL NOEL ELLIS 18/III/2024   Some of us would be maintaining aquariums. They would know that it takes a great effort to catch a particular fish. Especially, when there are fish galore in the tank. Fish are clever. They may look innocent and cute but are super intelligent, according to my experience. They know and anticipate danger. Fish in water are not easy to catch. They know if there is something amiss. Let me give a little story of catching one guppy which was evading me and my fish net for almost a month. How hard I tried, it was all in vain. All the other fish got caught, but this smart fishy managed to wriggle out. Once she got caught but then jumped back and hid herself for many days. Why I was after this particular guppy was because she was the ‘odd man’ out. This tank had only mollies. The two species can coexist but then it was not fair. Spotting this guppy was like finding a needle in a haystack. I wanted her to live w...
