 MY SECRET AFFAIR

There is this girl who has fallen head over heels over me. I am not sure whether to break the news to my wife. Though I have an inkling that she has a whiff. Until she doesn’t object, I think I can continue. Only thing is that I would have to meet her secretly.

She used to roam around our lane. We would have exchanged glances casually. She would halt for a while, just a break in step, taking a pause to see if I gave her a signal. I too had taken a liking for her.

She would come unannounced sometimes and wait on the road outside for me to make an appearance. However, how would I know that she is waiting for me? She didn’t have my number, nor did I. It was back to the good old days when phones did not matter but the feelings mattered more.

Then one day, she was passing by from the lane across the common lawn. I was in a dilemma whether to call her or not, for the obvious reason. However, there was a chemistry going between us and I waved to her. She looked towards me with those eyes of hope. She too was in two minds.

She had lovely eyes, lined with Kajal. Her hair is soft, silky, curly and wavy. Her walk was majestic, just like a model on a ramp. Her smile was addictive and everlasting. Who won’t fall in love?

Then one fine day, I was taking a walk. She was crossing by. Was it a coincidence or was it planned by her? I said Hi! I didn’t know her name, she probably knew mine, as it was there on the nameplate. I was not sure where she lived but she froze and looked at me.

Our eyes met. Both of us broke into a broad smile. Before I could say anything she gave me a hug. I said, to hell with the world and hugged her back. We stood there for a while. Excited, she ran away blushing at what she had done. I called for her to wait but she disappeared round the bend. She left an ache in my heart.

I waited, thinking that she would return, but she didn’t. With a heavy heart I returned home, glancing over my shoulder, if I could see her and meet her just one more time. At least we could have exchanged numbers or she could have told me about her villa where she stayed. But alas!

One day, my wife and I were sitting in the veranda sipping our cup of tea and there came my sweetheart. Before she could spring surprises, I had already mentioned about this beautiful dame to my wife. She didn’t raise any objection.

Our lady just came and hugged me and showered all her love on me. I too let go and forgot that the world was watching. She whined and whimpered and finally when we broke our embrace we opened our eyes to see and mouths to speak.

She immediately got up and went into the row of pots. Her love for plants was obvious. After having a quick look she returned and had water. Then within a blink of the eye she ran again, as I heard her mom in the vicinity.

Her mom came to know of our affair and locked her at home, this we came to know later. On our walk the next day she called. I waved. I understood that her parents are cross but what to do.

In the evening after dinner, out of the blue this girl was standing infront of me. Her mom came running calling out her name. Jimmy… come back, no…... Now I know her name. Jimmy, I called and then she was at my feet.

Yes ladies and gentlemen, Jimmy is a Golden retriever staying down the lane. Moment she finds her door open, she rushes to our home. Instead of pawing our door, she sits and softly whimpers till we meet her and pour our love. She is a darling. Will her parents allow her to keep visiting us and let us continue with our secret affair? I wonder!!!!!!!!

SCENE AT ELLIS’ RESTAURANT

LT COL NOEL ELLIS   04/XI/2024   Every morning the scene in the Ellis’ restaurant is so refreshing. The notes birds sing sounds like ‘reveille’ being sounded by the buglers. The ‘scenario’ keeps varying with arrival of different birds at different timings.   It is like being a restaurant owner, working solo with minimum help. Yours truly is the waiter, housekeeper, cook, receptionist, barman, purchase manager, accountant, and storekeeper of this shack. Imagine!   Foremost thing in the morning is housekeeping of the garden area, followed by watering the pots. This gives the plants a nice bath, like kids being readied for school.   The first set of ‘clients’ called the ‘Tailor Birds’ appear. They love to hunt for insects which get disturbed by the watering ritual. They sing and dance, hop and skip and carry on chasing moths and worms, without bothering about my presence.   By then the Bulbuls and the Sparrows start lini...

A TRIBUTE TO INDIA’s FINANCIAL WIZARD

LT COL NOEL ELLIS   27/XII/2024   Last night one heard a heart-breaking news of the passing away of Dr Manmohan Singh. A sardar with a big Dil and a sharp Dimag. My heartfelt condolences to the family and every citizen of India.   Let me share an anecdote of a chance encounter with his office three decades ago. It was in 1993-94, he was the then ‘Finance Minister’ of India.   The story goes that we were part of the "Ski-Himalaya Expedition". The expedition was preparing to traverse a 1500 km ski touring voyage from Karakoram Pass to the base of Mount Kailash in Nepal passing through the states of J&K, Himachal Pradesh and UP.   Those days, it was not easy to fund the expedition. We found a few sponsors. Let me confess, we were under the Army adventure cell for the preparations. The internal ‘red tapeism’ was killing us. Delays in procuring equipment due to the complex ‘Kagzi Karwai’ was taking too much time. Our window of skiin...
